Fence Options Every DFW Homeowner Should Consider

Dallas–Fort Worth Wood Fence Guide: Styles, Heights, and Upgrades
Whether you need complete privacy from passing traffic or an upgraded driveway gate, this guide covers our standard fence styles, heights, included features, and available upgrades.
Fence Styles
Side-by-Side Fences are the standard style installed by most homebuilders across DFW. Pickets are placed right next to each other flush at installation. However, as the natural wood shrinks and contracts over time, visible air gaps form between the pickets, allowing neighbors or street traffic to see into your yard.
Board-on-Board Privacy Fences are our most frequently installed fence style. Known as a true privacy fence, the pickets are installed in an overlapping pattern. When the wood contracts over time, the overlap ensures the borders remain covered, completely blocking the view from neighbors and passing vehicles.
Fence Heights and True Dimensions
Standard fence callouts (6 foot or 8 foot) do not reflect the final heigh once kickboards and caps are installed. We include a standard ground-contact kickboard on every build, and offer an optional top cap.
Note: We offer board-on-board fences in both 6-foot and 8-foot heights. Side-by-side fences are available in 6-foot heights only.
Height Breakdown:
- Standard 6-Foot Fence: Measures 6'3" total including the standard 3" exposure kickboard
- Standard 8-Foot Fence: Measures 8'3" total including the standard 3" exposure kickboard
- 6-Foot Fence with Optional Cap: Measures 6'5" total (+2" top cap)
- 8-Foot Fence with Optional Cap: Measures 8'5" total (+2" top cap)
City Permits and HOA Compliance: Fence height limits, style restrictions, and setback rules vary across DFW municipalities and HOA communities. We handle all city permitting on your behalf and build every project to ensure full compliance with your local guidelines.
Standard Fence Features
All our fences are build right to withstand North Texas weather:
- Japanese Cedar Pickets and Rails: Delivers an optimal balance of natural rot resistance, aesthetics, and overall value.
- Double-Trim Top Finish: Two trim pieces run along the top of the fence to create a dimensional, finished appearance that most customers think is a custom cap.
- Ground-Contact Kickboard: A pressure-treated pine board installed at ground level with 3" of consistent exposure. We intentionally leave kickboards unstained; stained kickboards quickly show wear from lawnmowers, string trimmers, and pets.
- Old Fence Removal and Disposal: Complete tear-down, removal, and haul-away of your old fence is included at no extra charge.
- Complete Permitting: We call 811 and manage the municipal permitting process from start to finish.
Custom Upgrades and Options
Customizing your fence allows you to solve specific layout challenges and ensure all neighbors are happy with the outcome.
- Postmaster Steel Posts: A flat steel post that sits flush with the rails and is covered completely by a single cedar picket. They deliver the strength of steel but look like a wood post. These are ideal for shared fence lines and are especially valuable for double-sided fences. Watch this Postmaster Post video to see how they work.
- Double-Sided Fences: When neither neighbor wants the exposed framework side of the fence in their yard, pickets are installed on both sides combined with Postmaster posts for a seamless look from both properties.
- Boxed Posts: Wood pickets wrapped neatly around traditional round metal posts to hide the steel framework.
- Walking Gates: Pedestrian swinging walking gates that are not wide enough for a vehicle.
- Driveway Gates: Motorized or manual driveway gates in swing or sliding configurations.
- Western Red Cedar Upgrade: Premium Western Red Cedar construction available for maximum durability, natural oil content, and high-end finish.
Fence Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most private wood fence style?
Board-on-board fences are the best choice for total privacy. Because the pickets overlap, no gaps appear when the wood naturally shrinks, preventing anyone from seeing into your yard.
Can I re-use my existing posts?
Reusing existing posts depends on their current depth, spacing, integrity, and the style of fence you plan to install. Because your posts may not be appropriate for your new fence, we often give post credits towards brand-new posts rather than reusing the old ones.
Is post-spacing the same for 6' and 8' fences?
No. An 8-foot tall privacy fence catches significantly more wind than a standard 6-foot fence. For 8-foot fences, we space posts closer together, every 6 feet instead of the standard 8-foot spacing, and use posts that are 3 feet longer (allowing for 2 extra feet above ground and 1 extra foot set deep into concrete.)
Do you do horizontal fences?
Yes! We do horizontal fences, which look fantastic on modern homes.
Can I put a fence in my front yard?
Putting a fence in your front yard is dictated by the municipality and HOA. When they are allowed, typically they are only allowed to a limited height, such as 4 feet.
Can I finance my fence? Yes, we have many financing options to suit your needs. See our Financing Learning Center to learn more
